the slides are in the camping area past the johnsondale bridge. i believe it is near campground 3. this dude seems to have specific directions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtzYaTNlxpQ
we camp anywhere near the river that is not an established campsite. as long as you are camping 50 feet from the river and have a fire permit you can camp anywhere out there. we go toobin in town, we usually put in above the power plant then come up under the bridge in kernville. we will do the same run maybe 5 times a day. dont ever pay for camping or toobin/rafting up there. DIY or die.

Was your campsite close to the slides? I’m planning a trip to the kern at the end of the month and I’m way down for this, the floating too!
we camped at the hot springs first night then about 8 miles north of kernville on the second night. didnt make it up to the slides this year.
where exactly are the slides?
